The cycling and hiking path along the river Saale is one of the most popular in Germany. Following the course of Saale from its spring by the big Waldstein in Bavaria to the river mouth in Barby (Saxony-Anhalt), the cycling and hiking path is about 427 km (265 miles) long and one of the most challenging. Its upper reaches are characterised by many ascents and hills. From Saalfeld downstream, the path can also be recommended for families with small children. For shorter distances or arrival and departure, you might also go by train, as the railroad line Saalfeld - Naumburg with many stops follows the river Saale through the valley. The well-maintained cycling and hiking path along the Saale and many hotels and guesthouses make sure that you can enjoy active holidays.
